Lieutenant Colonel Gunnar Kiersey

Deputy Director, Reserve Affairs and Senior ARNG Advisor OTSG

LTC Gunnar Kiersey currently serves as the Deputy Director, Reserve Affairs and Senior Army National Guard Advisor within the Office of the Army Surgeon General.  LTC Kiersey is responsible for Reserve Component analysis of Department of the Army level staff actions supporting the Army Surgeon General by planning, directing, and managing Reserve Component actions in support of the Total Force.
LTC Kiersey enlisted in the Army National Guard at age 17 and has over 25 years of service. He served seven years as an enlisted helicopter mechanic and crew chief.  LTC Kiersey graduated from Officer Candidate School and commissioned into the Chemical Corps in 1999 with a later reappointment into the Medical Service Corps in 2004.   His assignments include Chemical Officer, 1/238th Aviation Regiment; Brigade Assistant S4, 63rd Troop Command; Commander, HHD 146th Medical Evacuation Battalion; and Battalion S1/Assistant S3, 146th Medical Battalion. His recent strategic level assignments include Medical Readiness Officer at National Guard Bureau (NGB), Operations Branch Chief for the Medical Readiness Division at the Office of the Surgeon General (OTSG), Chief of Medical Operations at NGB and Deputy Director Reserve Affairs at OTSG.  He holds additional skill identifies 3R Force Management and 8X Medical Acquisitions.
LTC Kiersey holds a Master’s of Business Administration in Health Care Management from Davenport University, Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2008.  He also holds a Bachelor's of Applied Science in Health Care Administration and an Associate's of Applied Science in Physical Therapy. 
His military education includes the AMEDD Officer Branch Qualification; AMEDD Officer Advanced Course; Medical Evacuation Doctrine Course; Health Services Human Resource Managers Course; Combined Arms Exercise; Army Force Management Course; Health Services Plans Operations and Intelligence Course; Command and General Staff College Immediate Level Education with the Advanced Operations Course; Reserve Component National Security Course and the Joint Medical Operations Course.
His deployments include U.S. Support Group Haiti 1995-1996 as an aircraft mechanic with Detachment 1, Company D, 2/238th Aviation Regiment and Operation Iraqi Freedom 2006-2007 as the Executive Officer for the 1171st Area Support Medical Company.
LTC Kiersey’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters (OLCs), Army Commendation Medal with one OLC, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Achievement Medal with three OLCs, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal with M-device and silver hour-glass, Joint Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal and Army Unit Superior Award.  He is the 2007 recipient of the Health Services Human Resource Manager Award of Excellence.
